Project Background: Introduction

This initiative is all about making industry life easier by finding and communicating ‘common ground’ regarding the application of regulations at UK event venues, specifically regarding exhibition business activity.  Despite the focus on exhibitions, the featured guidance will have some relevancy to other types of event activity (such as conferences and other similar events).

Years in the making, the objective of this joint AEV and ESSA initiative is to identify and convey the commonality (and, in unavoidable circumstances, the differences) regarding working at UK venues, in order to create a more transparent and less fragmented national working environment for key stakeholders (organisers, venues and supplier companies) of our innovative, fast-paced industry.

These guidelines have been produced by working industry professionals who represent the best advice currently available, and who will themselves have to work within the guidelines in their own professional capacities.  In the hands of competent organisers, suppliers, and clients/exhibitors, these guidelines should become an invaluable tool, which will simplify safety planning, safety management and other operational issues on the floor.

In the long term we hope that these guidelines will develop into the founding basis for a universally understood set of principles for managing health & safety, and other operational issues within the AEO, AEV and ESSA membership.  Our key driver is for less effort to be spent simply trying to interpret the rules, so more effort can be directed to delivering the best possible service to our customers, the event clients/exhibitors and visitors.
